Joanna’s first major lead role was as
the high-kicking, glamour puss Purdey in the hugely successful TV
series The New Avengers. But of course there is so much more to
Joanna than high-kicking and long legs. She has modeled, danced
and starred in films, TV shows and contributed enormously to many
charitable works. Honoured by the Queen and recognised by millions,
she is a household name and face.
Joanna Lumley was born in Kashmir and came to England as a young
girl to complete her schooling at St Mary’s School in Sussex
and to take up ballet.
Joanna's first acting job was on the 1969 James bond film On Her
Majesty’s Secret Service. She also starred in a brief but
memorable stint on Coronation Street in which she turned down Ken
Barlow's offer of marriage. Sapphire And Steel cemented her reputation
as an English rose, and in 1982 and 1983 Joanna made two Pink Panther
films.
Continuing to appear in films and TV series, she seemed to pop
up almost everywhere for a long time, before suddenly making yet
another big appearance in 1992 with another well-loved and memorable
TV character - this time, as the delightfully, outrageously camp
and hedonistic Patsy Stone, in Absolutely Fabulous. Patsy remains
a classic comedy character from the show that won 3 BAFTA’s
and a British comedy award.
Continually in demand as a star of the stage and screen, Joanna
has also written five books, including her autobiography ”Stare
Back and Smile”, is a Producer for BBC TV programming and
continues to support many charities. She was awarded an OBE in the
1995 New Years Honours.
